Cabinet decides to cancel lease of Mainul Road residence: Khaleda to be evicted from Cantt home |

The government yesterday decided to cancel the lease of the residence of Leader of the Opposition in Parliament and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia at 6 Mainul Road in Dhaka Cantonment.
The decision forfeiting the allotment of the house given to the Zia family was taken at a cabinet meeting yesterday just after a week of the Prime Minister\'s call to the opposition leader in Parliament to vacate the house for the sake of rehabilitation of the family members of the army officers slain in the carnage at the BDR headquarters on February 25-26.
The cabinet meeting held at Bangladesh Secretariat with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair termed the allotment of the land illegal.
\"The decision to cancel the lease allocation of Khaleda Zia\'s cantonment residence was taken as leasing more than one house to the same person is contrary to the existing laws of the land,\" said Prime Minister\'s Press Secretary Abul Kalama Azad while briefing reporters after the cabinet meeting.
He said as Begum Khaleda Zia was given a second house, on 1.5-bigha in Gulshan, it has been decided to cancel the allotment of the 9-bigha cantonment house.
The Prime Minister\'s spokesman said the Mainul Road residence on nine bighas of land was leased out without decision of cabinet meeting in 1981 at a token price. In 1982, another residence on one-and-a-half-bigha land in Gulshan was allocated to the family of the President Ziaur Rahman following a cabinet meeting\'s decision and choice of the family.
On April 1, the Prime Minister responding to a question in Parliament called upon the opposition leader, also a former premier, to vacate the cantonment house arguing that blocks of apartments would be built in the prime land for families of army officers killed in the BDR mutiny.
\"Why should you (Khaleda), being a political leader, live in the cantonment? You were allotted another house on one-and-a-half-bigha land in Gulshan, why will you keep the army land?\" Hasina questioned Khaleda.
\"I will request her to leave her 6 Shaheed Mainul Road house in Dhaka Cantonment,\" she told Parliament.
The Prime Minister also observed that the house was allocated to Khaleda in violation of the Cantonment Board Law.
It may be mentioned that the BNP-led four-party government soon after assumption of power had cancelled the land allocation for Rehana and established Dhanmondi Police Station.
In 1981, the BNP government led by Abdus Sattar gave away the nine-bigha house to her. In 1982, after his March 24 takeover, Lt Gen Ershad gifted the 1.5-bigha Gulshan house to ensure a regular source of income for the family of his predecessor. |
